Breaking one into three: Surface-tension-driven droplet breakup in T-junctions

چکیده
We report a novel droplet breakup regime in the microfluidics T-junction, where new interfaces are created two arm channels, rather than at center of junction. show that there is different hydrodynamic root for this regime, and propose simple geometric rule which enables compared to classical T-junction. A dynamic model lower capillary number (Ca) developed predict process. also higher Ca central recovered same

Analytical relations for long-droplet breakup in asymmetric T junctions.
We develop accurate analytical relations for the droplet volume ratio, droplet length during breakup process, and pressure drop of asymmetric T junctions with a valve in each of the branches for producing unequal-sized droplets. An important advantage of this system is that after manufacturing the system, the size of the generated droplets can be changed simply by adjusting the valves. The resu...
متن کاملSurface-tension driven open microfluidic platform for hanging droplet culture.
The hanging droplet technique for three-dimensional tissue culture has been used for decades in biology labs, with the core technology remaining relatively unchanged. Recently microscale approaches have expanded the capabilities of the hanging droplet method, making it more user-friendly. We present a spontaneously driven, open hanging droplet culture platform to address many limitations of cur...
متن کاملDroplet breakup in an asymmetric microfluidic T junction.
Breakup of non-uniform droplets in an asymmetric T junction consisting of an inlet channel and two different-size outlet channels has been investigated numerically. Also, an analytical approach in the limit of the lubrication approximation has been extended to provide some analytical relations to study the system and verify the numerical results. Parameters that are important in the performance...
متن کاملDroplet Formation at Microfluidic T-junctions
Analysis of droplet formation in microfluidic systems is important to understand the operation of these devices, and to permit optimal design and process control. Droplet formation in microfluidic Tjunction devices was studied using experimental and numerical methods. The simulations agree well with experimental data from PDMS devices; they show that droplet pinch-off is controlled not by visco...
متن کاملLiquid jet instability and dynamic surface tension effect on breakup
We studied the instability of a liquid jet by confocal microscopy, a non-invasive three-dimensional imaging technique. The amplitude of jet oscillation can be measured from its early stage to the vicinity of the jet breakup with a radial resolution of 80 nm. A continuous jet with a diameter of 100 μm and mean velocity of 5.6 ms was perturbed at a frequency of 11.8 kHz. The growth rate of the si...
